Several chart types are available, which organize and present your data based on time periods. You have simple Fiscal Year and Calendar Year totals, which present each interval's total continuously with one in each column.

You then have two options for presenting monthly and quarterly data: Continuous and Year to Year. Continuous simply shows each interval's amount, one per column, continuously horizontal until all data has been shown. See the example below:

The same data can then be shown in By Month: Year to Year:

As you can see, the year to year chart is a great way of comparing income or expense for the same month for each year. This also is a good way of showing trends throughout the year. Continuous and Year to Year are also options for Quarterly totals.
