Studiometry Nightly Builds Now Available

We're happy to announce that we've added a new section to our Studiometry website, Studiometry Nightly Build, which allows us to get fixes out quicker to the users who need them. These won't be truly "nightly," as there won't be an update every single night, but they will be updated whenever a stable build is available that contains updates or fixes that users need.

These builds will require registration just the same as any other Studiometry version. They will also technically be considered the same as the current official release version (for example: Studiometry 6.1.1 pre-release will be Studiometry 6.1nb, while Studiometry 6.1.2 pre-release would be Studiometry 6.1.1nb) so that you can still be alerted when the final version is released.

Studiometry 6 Announced: Will be released later this summer

The new version of Studiometry will contain many great enhancements and feature additions. We've spent a lot of time focusing on improving saving and loading time for users with large amounts of data. A completely overhauled data format, where common items such as Debt/Credits and Projects are stored in a local SQL database as opposed to an XML file, produces incredible performance results. Load times will be significantly faster after a one-time process of converting your data to the new format. In testing we have seen Studiometry 6 take as little as 40-50% of the time Studiometry 5.x took to load the same data.

The best part of the new data format, however, isn't the improved load times. With the new SQL database behind Studiometry, all changes made to the common data items (projects, clients, debt/credits, etc) are saved IMMEDIATELY to file. This removes the need for periodic data saves, which previously could take upwards of 10 minutes in the background for users with tens of thousands of items in Studiometry. This also removes the need for Studiometry to save all data when quitting, which produces a reduction in quit and save times from several minutes to less than 5 seconds in nearly all cases.

The new data format still maintains the flexibility of the previous format where all data is stored locally on every machine and can be accessed without a connection to the server. It's the best of both worlds with an SQL database mixed with the previous XML data file format.

In addition to the revamped data format and performance, Studiometry 6 will contain over 75 new features, updates, and enhancements. Other notable new features include Data Rows for Visual Invoice templates, allowing you to create a template-within-a-template for displaying items such as Debt/Credits. Data rows are vertically a flexible space that will stretch based on the information shown for each item, giving unsurpassed flexibility in creating your custom templates.

Additions to the Report features allow you now to select specific items for each report, either manually or via Item Sets such as Paid, Unpaid, Estimated, Un-Invoiced, Billable, Purchase Order, and more. These new features give Studiometry the ability to create itemized estimates and purchase orders based on entered information.

Other features include a completely overhauled interface, one-click invoice and report generation, additional keyboard functionality, updated Time Sheet entry window, and many others. Oranged Software announces Accounted

Oranged Software is proud to introduce a new member to our software lineup: Accounted. Accounted is a powerful solution with many of the features seen in more expense accounting programs, but with the ease of use of a much smaller application. Powerful features such as double entry accounting, accounts receivable/payable, split transactions, and check printing are included. But we also focused on the interface and user experience. Accounted includes many small touches, such as the "totals ticker" that instantly shows several totals at the bottom of each account. You could easily, for example, view and compare the total income of a certain account for this month, last month, this fiscal quarter, this fiscal year and more without making any mouse clicks.

Studiometry 4.1.6 Released

Studiometry 4.1.6 is a small update the week before Studiometry 5.0 will be released. This update adds compatibility with Oranged Software's new accounting product: Accounted. Another post dedicated to Accounted will be up soon after this. This update also allows you to go between 4.x and 5.x with the same data.

Studiometry 4.1.5 Performance Patch Released

Studiometry 4.1.5 is a free update for all registered Studiometry 4.x users. This update is a performance patch, dramatically increasing performance in two parts of the program. Loading a Visual Invoice Template for editing, or generating a Visual Invoice for a customer will now be approximately 95% faster on all machines. This translates to less than one second on most machines to load most Visual templates.

The second area focused on in this release is network syncing. Studiometry will now connect to and sync with a server anywhere between 80% to 97% faster (based on our tests) after the very first initial sync with a server. Both of these performance increases were created and implemented into the program as a free update for all registered Studiometry 4.x users, and serve as a precursor to the upcoming Studiometry 5.

Upcoming Performance Patch

Studiometry 4.1.5, which will be released sometime early next week, features drastic performance improvements to two areas of the program. We've been spending much time working improving the performance of Studiometry 4.x to prevent users from feeling "forced" into upgrading to Studiometry 5 when it is released simply for performance reasons.

Network Syncing at Startup
Many users have reported slower than optimal network syncing when launching Studiometry. Some users, even with large bandwidth networks and high-performance machines, would have to wait minutes for the full sync to be accomplished. We've spent much time optimizing code and testing specific setups with our in-house test data as well as submitted user data, and we're glad to be able to say we've dramatically improved initial sync times. Here are some of the timed samples:

As you can see, these are very large speed enhancements, which can be noticed even on machines that didn't take very long initially to sync. Please note, however, that performing a manual full sync (Networking Menu > Sync Now) will still take longer than desired on some machines, simply due to the fact that every item must be sent to and then back from the server. These syncs will still be faster, but not nearly as fast as the initial syncs.

Visual Invoice Template Loading
We've also gotten feedback from users regarding sluggish loading of Visual Invoice Templates for editing templates and generating Invoices. After spending much time optimizing the code for loading and viewing the Visual Templates, we can now say there are equally drastic performance improvements in this area.

The templates, even complicated templates, now load near-instantly on almost all machines.

Studiometry 4.1.5 also features several other small bug fixes, mainly related to Windows specific issues. Studiometry 4.1.5 will be a free update for registered users of Studiometry 4.x, and will be available for download early next week.

Studiometry 4.1.4 Released

Studiometry 4.1.4 is a small patch fixing several minor issues and adding improved syncing speed as well as an additional Invoice/Report template tag. This is a free update for all registered Studiometry 4.x users.

- New tag added for Invoice/Report templates. ItemSequentialNumber counts up from one for each debt/credit item on an invoice
- Fixed an issue that could prevent certain strings of text from working correctly in the search window
- Fixed an issue on Windows not allowing some setups to edit Invoice/Report templates
- Fixed potential crash in search window when re-checking the Include Non-Live Items checkbox
- Fixed potential issue caused with the Auto-discovery classes that help find local Studiometry servers

New Update Coming Soon

We are in the process of fixing a few small bugs for the next Studiometry release. There are workarounds for the two main issues people are currently encountering.

Currently, there are users (mainly on Windows) encountering crashes when editing Code Based report/invoice templates. If this is happening to you, try changing your Default Invoice Save location in your Preferences window > General section. This crash is caused if the folder marked as the default save location has been moved, renamed, or deleted. This issue has been fixed for Studiometry 4.1.3.

Some users on certain setups are encountering issues with the File Menu > Restore from Backup command. Sometimes the program will not correctly quit after restoring the backup, causing the copied backup file to be written over with the currently loaded data. This causes no data loss, but does not actually restore the backup file. To get around this:

1. Quit Studiometry
2. Locate your desired backup file and duplicate it
3. Rename the file "com.studiometry.plist"
4. Place the file at: Home/Library/Application Support/Studiometry/com.studiometry.plist
5. Launch Studiometry

This issue has been fixed for Studiometry 4.1.3 as well. We are expecting to release Studiometry 4.1.3 sometime early next week.

Studiometry 4.1.2 Released

Studiometry 4.1.2 is a small update fixing several issues and improving performance for many users. The recent date format issue noted here has been fixed with this release. This is a free update for all registered Studiometry 4.x users.

- Many users will see noticeable speed improvements in launch times and other areas of the application
- Fixed an issue related to the build process that was affecting dates with two digit years and causing other problems throughout the program
- Fixed a display issue in the preferences related to Program's Invoice ID behavior
- Fixed a potential issue with Invoice, Client, or Project ID's not syncing correctly over certain types of networks
- File encryption is now turned off by default (this will only effect users opening Studiometry for the first time)
- Modified default settings for Backups
